* I drove along the winding roads like a bat out of hell. Caiden Bauer had been silent for most of the trip. I know he blamed me for Kristen Bauer being in the condition she was in, and he wasn't wrong. I was sick with worry, but I had a pack that needed me to claim them and lead them. Everything else had to wait. I almost missed the turn to the small clinic where Sebastian Monroe sat with Gracie-Lynn Jericho . I parked next to the car Sebastian had been driving. Caiden opened his door. "I want to see for myself that Grace is okay, and I'll grab Monroe." I nodded as he headed in. I didn't wait long before he marched back out with Sebastian in tow. Once they were both in the car, I squealed backwards out of the parking lot. "How is Grace?" I asked, fearing the answer. "She hasn't woken up yet. She had the bairn, named the bairn and passed out. Nurses say she's doing alright, just recovering from her ordeal. I don't know." Caiden had just finished texting who I assumed was Gina with the update. "We're on our way to put Wilson and his minions out of our misery." I stomped the gas. "Too late for that, ol' chap. I blew that place to smithereens." I slammed on the brakes in the middle of the road. "You WHAT?" I whipped my head around. "You didn't have the balls to do it. Besides, Wilson had some kind of robotic, demonic wolves. Trust me, it's for the best." I bit back my angry growl. "That wasn't your decision to make, Monroe." He shrugged. "Too little too late now, mate." I slammed the accelerator and headed back to where we had found Kristen and Grace. "I did you a favor. They took innocent women and children. You should have seen the bodies strewn about. You'll be fortunate if any of your pack survived their experiments." I wanted Monroe to just shut the fuck up. Caiden was silent for most of the conversation. "Grace shot Cantwell. In the head. He had attempted to rip Gina's head off." I closed my eyes briefly. "Was he dead?" Caiden shrugged. "I didn't hang around to find out. He took Grace and I took Gina and we left. The gun had silver bullets." I nodded. "Okay, great. So, we may have to face off with that asshole, again, and then I've got to figure out where the fuck the Talkeetna Pack is. I guess we know what we need to do, then." Monroe let out a soft snore and I wanted to strangle him. "I don't know what 'claiming your pack' entails, but let's make it quick. I want to make sure Kristen is okay." I agreed. I didn't know how long it would take to reclaim what belonged to me, but it had to be done. Once I made sure the weak and elderly were taken care of, I could concentrate on Kristen and making things right. *

* I landed behind a pillar next to Caiden, looking back as the explosion sent the container rocking before it imploded. "Aye, good night you nasty devil bastard." I muttered. "Can you warn us next time you decide to blow shit up?" Quinn snapped. "Was Cantwell in there? Did you blow him up, too? Because I never got a chance to check when robo dog showed up." I shrugged. "Always assume I'm going to blow shit up. It's what I do. And if he was in there, he's not anymore." The container was burning and smoldering in front of our eyes. I ground out the cigarette. "You ready to claim your pack or do you just want to sit here and belly ache over what's been done?" Quinn stood up and I followed suit, taking in the destruction that surrounded us. I grinned at my handy work as we made our way back to the truck. Caiden took shotgun and I climbed in the back. I was ready to be back on my own case. All that work for the 'good guys' was starting to turn me soft. Make me think we were a team. I kicked my feet up as we drove out of the destruction. "It's over, Coop. You just have to get your pack to see that you aren't a weak son of a bitch." He hit the brakes so hard I flew into the back of the front seats. He turned around. "I'm not weak. There were moles in my pack; a mistake I won't make again. I trusted the command my father did just to find out they killed him. I know everyone believes the exact same thing that you do, but you're all wrong about me." The silence was heavy in the truck. I'd said it to light a fire inside of him. His mind was on the little blonde cheetah and not on his pack. He was going to have trouble regardless and I wanted him pissed when he stepped up to take over. The survivors of Wilson's pack would be trouble if he didn't lead with a heavy hand. I'd seen it so much throughout the centuries. Men like Cooper were strong mentally and physically, and there were those would attempt to take him out. I just hoped he had better people guarding his back this time. *
ReplyDelete* I drove into the forked pass. It was where my father had always held his pack meetings and I wasn't disappointed. My grandfather made good on his promise. Usually, the Alpha was chosen after a fight to death. I didn't have Donovan Wilson's body nor his head. I climbed out of the truck and made my way towards the roaring fire. Snow was falling and the pack was no more than a haphazard crowd of maybe one hundred. Women and children stood huddled around the fire and my heart clenched when I realized their mates were most likely dead. A hush fell over the crowd as I made my way to the platform. My grandfather sat proud. Caiden and Sebastian moved behind me. I stood up on the platform, hugging my grandfather. "You made it." I nodded. "We did." I faced the crowd. "Donovan Wilson has been defeated." My announcement echoed off of the walls of the mountains. "With the help of these two men and others, we defeated him. We destroyed his holding." Murmurs went through the crowd. There were young men shifters glaring as I spoke. "I know that a lot of you think that I turned my back on you; abandoned you to the enemy. That's fair to say; but having said that, I had no choice. There were those within the ranks that betrayed me. That still may betray me." I eyed out the men. "I had to regroup and get fresh eyes on the scene. Junius Cantwell, my father's beta was one of those who betrayed me. He killed my father - your Alpha. He too has been defeated and killed. I stand before you, claiming this pack as my own. If anyone wishes to object, you have your chance now." The crowd was quiet, the only sound that of the wood popping in the fire. No one stepped forward. "From this moment on, I will take any challenge towards my leadership as a threat to the pack and it's well being. I will extinguish that threat by any means necessary. We will rebuild and we will be stronger." I let that sink in. "If anyone wishes to leave the pack, again, now is your chance. Otherwise, I'm going to accept all of you and you will accept me as your Alpha." No one left, but I knew better. There would be issues; there always were when new leadership took place. "What about your Beta?" A voice called out. "How will that be decided?" I had already made up my mind about that. "My beta has to be someone I trust implicitly. Allow me to introduce you to +Caiden Bauer." I gestured to Caiden. He looked like he'd swallowed his tongue. "He's no wolf!" "That's a fucking cat!" "He can't lead us!" I let out a howl that shut them all up. "It is irrelevant what he is, he's my beta. He will be respected and he will be accepted. I'd hate to take heads, but I'm just fed up enough to do it." I nodded to let that sink in. "In the meantime, I have some other things that require my attention. Yancey Cooper will be acting in my stead as I handle the few other things. I need to secure funds for materials to rebuild and then we're going to get started." I hopped off the platform, and gestured for Caiden and Sebastian to follow me. "Come on, we're flying to Bellingham. I need to claim my mate."
ReplyDeleteShock at Quinn's words had me looking at him with surprise. I thought he hated me. I mean I did mate his ex. He continued to sprout on about if anybody wanted to challenge him, but nobody spoke up or acted like they wanted to stand up to him. Quinn was tougher than I gave him credit for. Then he motioned to me and Sebastian. " Come on, we're flying to Bellingham. I need to claim my mate. " I followed but I was still dumfounded. " Wait. Coop? Are you sure about this? I mean you and I but heads at every turn. And mate? I'm sorry to tell you this, but I mated Gina already. " Sebastian snorted and I glared. " He's not talking about her, mate. He's talking about that pretty wild cat of a cousin of yours. They dance around each other, but they got the hots for one another. " I knew that, but I refused to hear it. Kristen was young. Okay she was an adult, but I always pictured her going back to Louisiana and mating my former business associate. Seth Masterson. But I knew that wasn't true even as I thought it. Seth was too boring for Kris. So it made sense she'd pick a mess of a mate. I sighed as I let it all sink in. I looked at Quinn as we made it to his truck. " You hurt her. Beta or not. I'll kill you. Now let's go get your mate and mine. " Gina had texted that Damon had gotten Kristen stable and would heal her more after they were out of the human clinic. Quinn smirked and I returned it with a smile of my own. We'd just became a team. An unstoppable team. I'd have his back and he'd have mine. This was going to be very interesting.
