* Nolan drove the SUV while Novalee navigated along treacherous mountain roads. Sebastian Monroe followed behind us in a car, carrying a cache of weapons. Gina-Leigh Jericho and Caiden Bauer were with him. Bauer hated me so it was no surprise that he rode with Monroe. I checked the tracker again to see it was still blinking. I was aware that a blinking light didn't guarantee Kristen Bauer was still alive, but I had hope. We turned a sharp ninety degree corner and I saw the tops of multiple warehouses in the distance. Adrenaline spiked through me at the thought of getting Kristen and Gracie-Lynn Jericho back. I knew most of my pack had scattered to avoid Donovan Wilson, but most were being forced to serve under him. We'd fight that out too before this was over. "Let me out here, I'm going in on foot." I instructed. Nolan's eyes met mine. "Sure that's a good idea?" I half shrugged. "I'm sure of nothing. But it'll give me a head start before they're alerted to the vehicles." He braked the SUV and I got out, heading into the thick overgrowth that surrounded the warehouses. I followed the tracker, using it as my guide. I scented nothing but dirt. There were no shifters or even animals in this area which was odd. I tried to keep my steps light as I moved, avoiding snapping sticks and dead, crunchy leaves. I saw the back of one of the warehouses and the tracker showed me that Kristen was somewhere inside. I eased along the cold concrete of it and peeked around the corner. The place seemed abandoned. I knew better though. This was the heart of Wilson's pack. I made my around the front and decided to start with this particular warehouse. I reached out and tried the handle. It was locked. I pulled out my gun and shot the handle off. I kicked the door in, my gun at the ready. My scope mounted light shined down a dark hallway. I made my way down the hallway, the doors open on each side, showing abandoned rooms. I stopped short when I smelled it. Blood. I followed the scent and came up on one door that was closed. The scent grew stronger and my wolf recognized it as Kristen's. I stepped back and used leverage to kick the door in. I heard the explosion simultaneously as something splattered on my face. Grace sat hunched in the corner, horror stamped on her face. Kristen's tiny body rocked from the impact of the bullet that had passed through her chest from her back. "NO!" I ran into the room, dropping my weapon and fumbling with the restraints that held her wrists and ankles. Her breath whistled in and out of her lips. I pulled the gag down. "Taz, what are you doing?" I grabbed her against my chest and laid her on the ground, cupping her face. "Kristen, baby, look at me." Her pupils were dilated. Her face was bruised and cut up. She half smiled. "Why did you do that? You're insane." I pressed my palms over the blood gushing down her sweater. I looked back and Grace hadn't moved. Tears streamed down her face. Blood pooled on the concrete floor. I wiped my hand down her face. "Why, baby, why?" Anguish filled my chest as I asked her, knowing she was going to die if we didn't get her out of here. *

I looked up at my mate's sister and she pointed at her sister, before she collapsed to the floor in pain. " Your bl..ood. S..she needs it. You're her mate. Y..you can heal her. " I reached for her and nodded. Sebastian came in at that moment. I looked at him as I let my fangs fall from my gums. I bit into my wrist and held it over Gina's lips. Blood dripped over them. I looked at Sebastian. " Help Gracie. She's in labor. Get her to the chopper. " He nodded and lifted Gracie into his arms. " What about you? " I controlled my emotions and sighed. " We'll be coming as soon as Gina shifts. Go. Get her to safety. Watch for Wilson. He wanted to mate her, so im sure he's lurking here somewhere. " Sebastian nodded and grinned. Something rare I'd suppose." I hope the Fucker is. I need to kill something. " I would've laughed if my mate hadn't been at death's door. I turned back to her and saw her tongue dart out before she latched on to my wrist and started sucking. I watched as the wound on her neck started to close. I sighed in relief as my mate's big hazel eyes looked up at me. Then she sat up. I pulled her into my arms and just held on tight. " Don't you ever fucking scare me like that again. Now shift and finish healing. " She sat up and handed me her weapons belt and I took it. " Caiden. Im a solider. Mating you hadn't changed that. " I growled, but decided we'd have this argument later, so I nodded and gave into her for the moment. I stood and watched as she shifted into the most gorgeous brown wolf I'd ever seen. " Let's get out of here. " She snorted and we took off running toward the exit.
ReplyDelete"Let's go, lass." I held onto the man they called Sebastian, looking back to make sure Gina was going to be okay. She was already moving around so I assumed she was okay. I couldn't think about the fact that I'd just killed Cantwell. Agonizing pain rippled through my midsection and down my thighs, and I bit back the scream as more fluid gushed between my thighs. Sebastian never faltered. "How long have you been laboring?" His voice had a slight accent I couldn't quite place. "I don't know." My voice was quiet. "The baby is breached, I think." I told him, knowing that I had to stink to high heaven and he most likely wasn't appreciative of my labor fluids soaking his clothes. He carried me as if I were no more than a sack of groceries. "We need to get you to a doctor." I rolled my eyes, but I knew that being antagonistic to the man practically saving me and my unborn child's life wasn't going to serve any purpose. There was a car and he opened the backseat, setting me inside. "Get comfortable, it's going to be a bumpy ride outta here." I looked back to see Gina in wolf form trotting beside Caiden, heading in another direction. Sebastian closed the door and hurried around front. "I don't think so, fucker." I heard the growled command and looked to the front of the car. Donovan Wilson stood there, a half a dozen men behind him, guns drawn. Sebastian seemed unaffected. I scrambled up front, and engaged the locks. "Grace stays here with me." Donovan came to the door and yanked the handle. "Sorry, wee winkle piss, but no." The wind picked up around Sebastian. "The girl stays with me, mate."
ReplyDelete* Anger warmed within my veins and I relished it. The fucker standing in front of me was going to die. I had seen a devastated Cooper carrying a dead Kristen. The female in the back of my car was in bad shape and would most likely die if she didn't get medical care. All of it reminded me of my own past. Of watching those I cared about most suffer. "It's pathetic how Coop left you to defend Grace against me. Against my army." I half shrugged. "Coop is pathetic, I'll give you that, but so are you." Wilson laughed. "I'm going to enjoy killing you." The chills started along the length of my body, my teeth set to chattering. My vision started to fade red as Wilson's men rushed me. My claws elongated as I ran towards them. Heat flared within my veins as I struck each wolf. Two men were sliced in half and the blood only increased my strength. One man lifted hia gun, but I grabbed the barrel of it and snapped it with little effort. I slammed my clawed hand into his chest and ripped his heart out, throwing it to the ground. They all rushed me then, bullets flying. I let the berserk take over as my vision darkened and became a tunnel of hate and murder. I felt none of their paltry attempts to stop me. I heard the glass shatter and looked back to see Wilson grabbing Grace through the window. He half dragged her, half carried her towards one of the buildings. I looked at the remaining men, all trying to cut me down. I would never be defeated. I whipped through them, leaving dead and mangled bodies in my wake. I stalked to where Donovan had taken the female. I saw the chopper clear the trees and knew it was up to me to bring Grace home. I approached the glass door and it was locked. My foot kicked through it effortlessly. I could smell her, her blood. A whimper reached my eyes and set my blood on fire more. I followed the sound of her cries. "No, please!" I saw him; strapping her to a bed, a man in a lab coat beside her with a syringe. "Get. Away." My voice was barely more than a growl. "Don't you dare listen to him!" Wilson spun on me. "What are you? Some kind of robotic man?" I shook my head. "Nothing so futuristic." His gun aimed at my heart. "Pity. We could have used you." Grace had stopped crying, her eyes closed and her face pale. I stepped into his gun. "You think your little popper scares me?" He pulled the trigger and smoke rose from my chest. His eyes widened. "What the fuck are you?" I grabbed him by his neck and lifted him as if he weighed nothing. "Ancient, motherfucker, ancient." I squeezed his neck, satisfaction warming me as he struggled to breath, his face turning purple much like mine probably was. I used my claws and took his head. It landed with a squishing sound. I turned to the scared rat in the lab coat. He had pissed himself. "I'm innocent! Please!" I stalked him. "You hurt them." I stated, getting closer to him. "He made me!" He pointed at Wilson's dead body. "No one makes a man do anything he doesn't want to do." I grabbed him by his ponytail. He was so scared, and I relished it. "Tell your excuses to your maker." My claws ripped through his neck. I dropped his body. I could feel the rage starting to clear and with it came the lethargy of abusing my muscles. I fell back against the wall and collapsed. Fuck. I had to get Grace out. But the weakness took over and I gave in to it. *
