* The motel room Slade had gotten me was nice. It was clean and the bed was comfortable but, the four walls were closing in on me. I showered and changed into a pair of jeans, tee and my hoodie. The jeans and tee were the last of my clean clothes. I'd have to find a laundromat soon. I stood in the doorway of my room, almost afraid to step out into public. When I left everything here was crazy. I knew that the town had changed with the new Alpha but, what if someone from my past saw me? Would they freak out? I just didn't know..I did know I was hungry and the diner was a short walk from the motel. It was a pretty day, warmer since spring had finally decided to settle in. I pocketed the room key and the little bit of money I had left and walked out, shutting the door behind me. The walk was pleasent and everywhere I looked I could see smiling faces, people working, children playing. It actually was a new town. I got to the diner and saw that it was mostly empty. I walked in and a bell over the door rang. " Just sit anywhere honey. I'll be right with you!" I went to a booth in the back and sat down where I could see the door. There was a newspaper someone had left on the table next to me and I reached over and grabbed it. Maybe, just maybe I could find work. As I skimmed the classifieds a shadow fell over me. I glanced up and smiled at the older lady. " Here is a menu for you darlin. Would you like some coffee?" I nodded and took the menu. " You sure have pretty red hair. Don't see that much around here. There a pretty little thing.." She stopped speaking as she set the coffee in front of me. I nervously smiled at her. " Oh my..Brenda..No it was prettier..Brennan..oh. you sweet thing! We all thought you were dead!" She one arm hugged me and the memory of her came to me. She used to give us cookies, all the kids knew she was good for a cookie.* Margaret. I remember you. I was gone for a while but under some strange circumstances I'm back. * Her smile was genuine and I relaxed a little. " So, what cha hungry for? Eggs, bacon, toast? Biscuits and gravy? Pancakes? " I thought about the money in my pocket and looked at the menu biting my lip. " You'll have the special sampler plate. Everything I mentioned for a dollar." I shook my head.* I can pay..Slade said he'd cover anything..* She touched my cheek. " Hogwash, you'll have the sampler like I said. You're too tiny as it is and, Slade would agree with me. Now, enjoy your coffee. I'll be back soon with your breakfast." I could only smile

Margaret had always been tenacious and arguing with her would be futile. I added cream and sugar to my coffee and went back to reading the paper. A few minutes later, the bell above the door rang and in walked the doctor from jail..well he treated Jordan in the jail. I gave him a small smile and went back to reading.*
* My head snapped up when he asked if we could go out sometime. I nodded because honestly, I really wanted to spend time with him. Something about him felt safe, like I could tell him anything and I wanted to explore that feeling. It was something I've never felt before. I gave him a small smile and looked at our hands.* I would love to go out with you sometime. Maybe you can show me how the town has changed. From the little bit I've seen. It's wonderful. * His smile was brilliant and I felt myself smiling wider . Alteady this male had me almost giddy. Margaret brought us our checks and Julian took them both before I could protest. He paid her and tipped her. She beamed at us and told us to come back soon. Out on the sidewalk I stuffed my hands into my hoodie pockets* I'm just staying at the motel for now until I'm done giving them information about the fighting ring I found Jordan in.. Then maybe I can check out my old family home.
ReplyDelete**We left the restaurant and I lead Brennan towards my car.** Your old family home? **She smiled as we took our time walking to my car.** “Yes, I grew up here. Before Drake became so obsessed with having the perfect, strongest pack. My family loved it here! I only hope the house hasn’t been ruined and I’ll be able to fix it up without much trouble.” *We stopped in front of my car and I looked at her.* I’d be happy to drive you out to the house and help you clean it up. I work every day but I do have early days. *Smiling, Brennan looked up at me.* “Thank you but won’t you be too tried after working?” No, I wouldn’t! Do you have a phone? *Brennan’s eyes widened and she shook her head.* “No, I got rid of it before I got Jordan out of that horrible place. That’s one of the first things I need to get.” I opened the door and helped her inside the car before walking around and getting into the drivers seat. As I started the engine, I looked over at the beautiful redhead. If you would let me id love to help you out and get a phone for you!? She opened her mouth to object and I stopped her. How about this? I could use more help at the clinic. If you take over the phones and filing the others could work more with the patients. What do you think? That way it’s not a hand out! I pulled away from the curb and headed for the hotel. I didn’t say anything because I wanted to give her time to think, but in my heart I wanted her to say yes. I wanted to take care of her and to spend time with her. I pulled to a stop in front of the hotel and turned to face Brennan and inhaled her scent again trying to infuse it into my soul. Well, what do you say?
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't be a handout. It'd be a job? * Julian nodded, his smile growing as he looked at me.* Well, I could definitely use a job so..Yes. I'd love to work at your clinic. * Julian smiled wide. It looked nice on him and I found that I had to smile back at him. " So, as soon as you're done with Slade and Beck let me know. I'll show you the clinic and get you a phone. Till then, here's my card with my number on it. Call me, please." I nodded and thanked him before I got out of his car. I stood on the sidewalk and watched him drive away until I couldn't see him anymore.*
