* We had arrived back at the sisters cabin. It was larger than I had anticipated and I hesitated before allowing Tanner McCloud to tug me inside. The one sister, who seemed to be in charge, half turned. * The shower is through there. * I assumed that was her way of telling me to clean up. I followed Tanner, taking in the cabin. The bathroom was small and the shower stall looked to have been added after the fact as it was a small space with a glass enclosure. It was clean though. Tanner reached in and started the water. We still hadn't spoken to each other. He gave me a gentle nudge and I stepped under the spray of the hot water. It felt amazing and I watched as the water ran red with Xavier's blood. I had killed a man. I could still feel the sensation of ramming the broken chair leg into his black heart. I felt sick over that realization. I was a murderer. Tanner stepped into the stall with me and our eyes met. He pulled me into his arms and held me. The water beat down on us as we held each other. * Tanner...I'm so sorry. * I didn't know what else to say. He shushed me and grabbed the wash cloth he had put inside the shower. Once it was lathered up, he scrubbed my skin clean. I in turn helped him clean up. Once we were both clean, he cut the water and stepped out of the water. He wrapped me in a large bath towel and then himself. There was a long dress folded on the counter along with jeans and a t-shirt. We were still quiet as we dressed. I stepped out of the bathroom first. The three women sat at a table waiting for us. * It's as if Miriam has returned. * One whispered. I looked to Tanner, but before he could speak, she stood. * I know you must be confused. I am Mongolia. This is Monique and Madelina. We are Miriam's sisters. Margaux, the one who inhabited you, she is also sister to us. Your mate reached out to us to help you when Xavier took you. * I nodded, remembering Miriam referring to them. * Xavier said he had Miriam. We had supper once. I haven't seen her since. * A look passed between Mongolia and Tanner. * What? What am I missing? * I could feel tension building as the silence continued. I turned to my mate. * Tanner?

* Monique stepped forward but before she spoke she looked to her sisters for conformation. They nodded and she braced her hands on each of Sadie's shoulders. * After Josiah was kilt. We don a search of the mansion. The basement was a series of cold damp dungeons. We found your mamere child. Miriam's remains were found in one of the rooms, along with a few other people. We're looking into who they were. * Sadie's eyes filled with tears and I stepped up beside her and Monique stepped back. I pulled my mate into my arms to comfort her. She let out a sob but she looked up at the sisters. * I had hoped, but now that I think about it..I believe I probably knew all along. Something was off with her during the dinner. Where's Serevina? Any word on her? She was a big alli in this whole mess. * I rubbed her shoulders. * She's who lead me to the sisters. She was helping us the whole time. I'd like to know what happened to her too? And I'm sure Virgil, Josephine, and the rest of the family would like to know you're alright. * I'd lost my phone somewhere along this battle so I looked around and saw a landline hanging on the wall across the room. I looked between the sisters. * If I can use the phone..I'll let them know and I should probably warn them to watch out for backlash from the Gators. * Mongolia nodded for me to do just that and I placed a kiss on Sadie's forehead before I walked over to the phone. *
ReplyDelete* Believing that my Mamere was dead and actually having confirmation were two different things and the pain in my chest could overwhelm me. I heard Tanner on the phone, his voice low, but comforting to me just the same. * Where are her....remains? * I asked. * The spell is done since Josiah is dead. We should be able to approach the mansion and remove the remains if you wish. Before, we used Monique's location spell to find her. * Tanner hung up the phone and I dropped down into an empty chair. I suddenly felt exhausted. I dropped forehead into my hand. Tanner stood behind me, his hands on my shoulders, slowly massaging. * I'd like to have her with me. * I whispered through tears. * Do we know what happened to her? I mean...I just... * I dropped off as more tears started to fall. Madelina stepped forward. * May I? * She held her hands out. I placed my palms flat on hers. A rush of wind whipped through my veins.
ReplyDeleteMamere was there, in her home. She was visibly upset. Josephine and Virgil were there, trying to comfort her. "Miriam, the police are on it. They'll find Sadie." She shook her head. "They won't." I watched as Josephine and Virgil hugged her before leaving the small house. I realized then that I was watching the aftermath of Carter taking me. Xavier swaggered up to the door of Mamere's home, his lackeys following him. He pounded on the door and she opened it. I could see the trepidation in her eyes as she squared off with Xavier. They argued when she told him I wasn't there. He had ransacked the cabin, not believing her. When he came back downstairs, his eyes glowed with his gator. "I know you hid her from me." He growled. "I did not!" She had shouted, shoving by him. He grabbed her and spun her around. "You never wanted me to have her!" Mamere sneered. "No, I didn't. But I wouldn't have had her kidnapped, you fool!" Something snapped inside of Xavier. His neck jerked and turned, twisting until his jaws elongated. In horror, I watched as he shifted too close to Mamere. The power of it blasted her against the kitchen wall. Plates fell out of the cabinets and shattered on the floor. She slumped, blood coming from her ears and nose. In that moment, I knew he had killed her, but he still advanced on her and snapped his jaws at her throat.* *
I jerked away from Madelina, sick to my stomach with sorrow and disgust. I bent at the waist, my arms crossed there in a bid to keep from shattering apart as I accepted the truth. Xavier had believed that Mamere sent me away and he'd killed her for it. Carter and Xavier were having a tug of war of power and I was the pawn; the victim in their game. And so was Mamere. The ransacked cabin that Virgil and Josephine had gone back to made sense. The blood they'd seen a perfect indication of what had taken place. I wanted to rail against the unfairness of it all. I wanted to go back and be with her for just one more day. I wanted her to meet Tanner, to know that he was an amazing man. Xavier had taken that away from me. He'd taken her from all of us. I looked up. * I want Mamere's remains.
* The sisters shared a look and I knew that they'd wanted to do a ceremony of their own, but Sadie had more rights to the remains as her granddaughter. I stared down the sisters and finally Mongolia nodded. * Fine. They be yours. We won be stopping ya. But we ask you bury her in sacred grounds. Keep her spirit from being restless. It needs to move on to be with our ancestors. * I looked up and smiled. * I know just the place. We live on sacred grounds. The Gaelic and the Native American shamans have blessed it. She'll rest. * They shared another look and then nodded. Sadie stood and faced her great aunts and then slowly walked over and hugged each one. * Thank you. For everything you did. * They gave her soft smiles and then nodded again. * We owed it to Miriam to end it. It was time. * They looked toward me. * We thank you, Tanner. You are Sadie's true mate. The one that sets her soul at ease. She'd have never forgotten you. No matter what Xavier pulled. She belong with you. * I smiled and Sadie looked up and I felt her hand settle into mine. * I know. I wouldn't have let her go without a fight. Then probably wouldn't then. I'd have fought till my last breath. * I squeezed my mate's hand. * Ready to take Miriam and go home? We've been gone a long time. * Sadie smiled. * More than ready. Hemi's going to flip out. Seeing as I left unable to shift and unmarried. Now I can shift and call my mate my husband. * I chuckled at that and agreed, but I knew Mason would be happy for me. Sadie stood and I took the box of remains when the sisters handed them over. Sadie curled her hand around my arm and we left after another tearfully sad goodbye and a promise to keep in touch. *
