Gypsy Camp

Gypsy Camp
* Cullen and I climbed back into his truck after Joel had given his orders. Once we were settled in our seats; I reached over to grab hold of Cullen's hand. * How are you doing? * He shrugged, staying silent and I threaded my fingers with his. * I know what Chitto meant to you Cullen. He was the only tie to your parents. So talk to me. * He glanced at me as he took the road that would lead us to the Gypsy encampment on the backside of the reservation. * I don't know what you want me to say Ash. Am I upset? Yes. Do I want to hunt the son of a bitch that murdered him down? Fuck yes! I just need to focus on the investigation. I know you're worried about me, baby. * He paused and gave my hand a squeeze. * I love you and I know you want to help me through it all, but I can't talk about it right now. Just give me time and I'll talk when I'm ready. * I nodded. * Alright. I understand and get it. I just want to be there for you like you were for me when Mel was killed. I love you too. * I turned away from him to look out the window as the scenery passed by as Cullen drove. I was sad for my mate, but if he needed space to process. Then I'd give it to him. *
* Soon we were pulling into the Gypsy camp and at the sight of children running and playing and adults milling about. * Oh wow. I love how colorful everything is and look at how beautiful everyone is. * I noticed several people eyeing us with curiosity. We pulled to a stop in front of a wagon with an elderly woman sitting in a lounge chair. A fire burning in a fire pit with a boar roasting on a spit over the flames. Scents of roasted pork filled my nostrils and made my mouth water. I pushed open the door and a beautiful female approached us cutting us off from the old woman. * Gretchen. Let them pass. * The elderly woman spoke through a cracked voice, that most older folks developed. * The girl stepped aside. * Excuse my granddaughter. She is very protective. * We nodded respectfully and I reached my hand out and introduced myself. * I'm Ashland Mathews and this is my mate and husband, Cullen. We hoped we could have a word with you? * She nodded. * My name is Amara. Have a seat. * Cullen and I sat down on two plastic chairs and Gretchen sat next to her grandmother. * Now. How can we help you?
* I followed after the girl as she started to run. I started to give chase. She fell to her knees when she reached the bank of the creek, they used for a water source. I stepped up breathlessly beside her. She was wrecked with sobs. * Gretchen? What's going on? You seem awfully upset about a man who just let you live on his land. If that's what it is. No one is going to make you move * She sniffled and hiccupped as she caught her breath. * That's not it. Chitto was a friend. He counciled our camp on occasion when Halian was unavailable. He was helping me find a way out of an arrangement my mother set up after my birth to a Romanian sheep herder. I'd have to move to Romania and I don't want to go. I'm content here and plus there's this guy that lives here.....* I smiled because now I understood. * Gretchen, was it a blood oath or was their money exchanged? I know a guy who had a blood oath. She died that's what broke his, but I'm sure we can find a way. * I sat back on my butt on the grass and she did the same. * Maybe if we found your true mate that would break it. * She shook her head. * My grandmother barely lets me out of her sight. The men in the camp are warned daily that I'm betrothed. There's one Elijah. He's so handsome and warms my insides when he looks at me. He's been threatened with banishment. Chitto was going to help us. I can't be sent to a whole nother country as a sheep herder's wife. * I crossed my arms over my knees and tossed a look her way. * I'll talk to Chitto' s widow and his son will be taking the role as Chief. So between us all we will find a way. * She wiped at her eyes. * Now. If I help you maybe you can help me. * She nodded. * Our priestess felt an evil presence. We tracked it, but we couldn't pin it. It all happened a few days ago. Whatever it is...it was very dark. * We talked a bit more and she answered my questions as we walked back toward the camp. When we arrived I noticed Cullen talking to a few men and the old woman was tending to the pork, and Gretchen cursed before rushing over to help her. I watched the old woman scold her and then move back to her chair. I turned away and headed over to the group of men and my mate. *
ReplyDelete* The men had come back early, dragging deer with them as they did. When they saw me, they immediately went on the defensive. I held my hands out. * I'm friend. I'm friend. * Amara stood and said something to them in their own language. Romani it sounded like to me. They relaxed, but still held their bow and arrows. The older of the men stepped forward. * I am Jardani, leader of this clan. * I shook his hand. * Cullen Mathews, I am a detective with the Bellingham Pack. Chitto Doxtator was found dead this morning in the sweat hut. We were wondering if perhaps you knew anything or had seen anything? * He looked to Amara. * We do not murder those who show us a kindness. We do not steal from them either. * I nodded. * I am just trying to help find who did this. * He was obviously concerned about his rights to the land. But that wasn't my decision. That was Halian's decision solely. * I suggest you look close. Closer than here. * I looked at Ashland. I wanted to know what Gretchen had told her. * Closer? * Jardani nodded. * Closer to home, my friend. The evil was felt days ago, but never passed this far south. * I absorbed what he said. * Do you have a future seer among you? * He shook his head. * We do not. * I knew he was lying. * I fear this is something you will need to discover on your own. But heed my advice: this evil is dark. And it will destroy all things good long before you ever discover it if you don't stop it soon. * I didn't like the way that sounded. * There's also a son missing. * The gypsy shook his head. * He can't be missing if he never returned. Please, I ask that you leave us in peace. We have done no harm and mean no harm. * I wanted to argue, grab him and demand he tell me what he knew, but Ashland was there, taking my arm and guiding me away. * Cullen, we need to talk. * I knew she was right, but I didn't want to leave. Instead, I let her guide me back to the truck. We got in and sat quietly. I punched the steering wheel as hard as I could. * FUCK! * I kept punching it. * Fuck, fuck, fuck!!
ReplyDelete* I grabbed for his hands. * Hey.. Hey...come on, baby. Calm down.. * He kept hitting the steering wheel, the blared and he fell forward and wouldn't look at me. Then I heard it.... a choked sob left his lips. I moved fast and wrapped my arms around him and he lost it. Finally giving into the grief of losing his only uncle, whom he'd just started to know. I knew the gypsies where watching, but I didn't care. My mate needed me and needed to let his feelings out. He soon calmed enough that I could scoot back to my side of the truck. * I need you Ash. I need you so much. I can't handle this without you. * I nodded. * You have me. Always. Lets go home. * He nodded and then started the engine and backed away from the camp and then cutting the wheel to carry us back into the center of the reservation and our home. *
