* I ignored the vibrating phone in my pocket several times throughout the day, but now that Binks was coming around, I decided I'd better answer it. It was an unknown number, excusing myself I left +Beck Hadrian side and walked outside. * Hello. * A deep voice answered. * "This is Sheriff Anderson with the Grant county Sheriffs office in Idaho." * I shook my head, confused. * Idaho? "Yes, sir. Is this Slade Michaels? * I looked down the street of the small town that Mik called home. * Yes. * He cleared his throat. * "The reason I'm calling and I hate to do this over the phone, but I found your pickup at the bottom of a ravine. It was burned beyond recognition. It took me two weeks to track you down with partial information off the license plate." * I started to pace, I felt like I'd been hit in the chest and couldn't breathe. * The person driving it, my fiance. Is she okay? * The sheriff sighed. * "I was hoping you would tell me it was stolen or something. I'm sorry sir, the fire burned so hot, it burned up half a mountain side. There were remains of a petite young adult. But she's burned so badly the coroner couldn't identify her by tissue sample, fingerprints or dentures. We did find a diamond ring, but it's in pretty bad shape. I tried to clean it up a bit, I could send pictures if you want?" * My heart felt like it was going to explode inside my chest. It couldn't be +Jordan McCormick * "Sir, did you wan't me to...." * My voice was raspy. * Yes, send the pictures. * I pulled the phone away from my ear and waited for the incoming text. The first was of the pickup, I couldn't recognize the color, but it was the same model as mine. I sunk down on my haunches, my other hand fisted in my hair as I waited for the next picture. It was of the mountain side. The whole thing, just scorched. The third was of a diamond ring that kind of resembled what I had given to Jordan, but I knew it was hers. * "Sir." * Tears, began to fall down my cheeks. I ignored the voice on the phone. She was gone, Jordan was really gone. Dropping the phone, I took off running. I heard Beck yell my name. Leaping into the air, my clothes shredded as I changed into my wolf and landed on all fours. I ran until I reached the top of a hill at the edge of town. Throwing my head back, I howled. The sound deafening, heartbreaking. The sound that a wolf would make when he loses the only person he was meant to love and spend his life with. *

* I raced over to Slades discarded phone. * Hello? Sir? Mr. Michael's? * I held the phone to my ear. * This is Beck Hadrian, Slade Michael's al...older brother. What has happened? * The man explained he was the sheriff of Grant county Idaho. I listened as he told me Slades truck had been found, burned. With a body. My own stomach clenched when the repercussions of what that meant became clear to me. * Thank you, Sir. We can be there in two days to identify the truck and pick up what belongings were salvageable. * I disconnected the call. Holy shit. I looked in the direction Slade had gone. Mikaela had told me to go with Slade and find Jordan. But it seemed as though Jordan was probably dead. I went back inside of the clinic. I needed to tell her everything. Then find Slade. Jacy was just coming out of another room. * You need anything, Beck? * She was reading me. * Slade took off. They found his truck burned. With a body in it. * She gasped. * I am so sorry. * I nodded. * I'll get Mikaela for you. * I stopped her. * I don't want her to be disturbed. We're going to go and identify everything first. Then I will speak with her. * Jacy hesitated but nodded. * Do you know anyone who can track Slade? * She nodded. * Which way did he go? * I told her. * He shouldn't get too far. It'll circle back to here. Joel built a wall to protect clinic from any outside attacks from the mountains. He'll be back. * I thanked her, hoping she was right. For the first time, I was unsure what I should do. *
ReplyDelete* Running fast and hard, I knew I should feel bad about leaving without saying a word, but right now I couldn't feel anything but rage and the slow shattering of my heart. I ran through the tree's so fast that things looked like a blur. I didn't expect the tall rock wall that I had to slide on all fours to just barely miss. What the fuck was there a wall here for? I looked both directions and the wall went on forever. Growling I changed back to my human form. I paced, nude and mumbled to myself before looking up into the sky, I started cussing the fates. * You allow the one person that completes me to be taken away from me and you couldn't even let me run?! Well FUCK YOU! * Clenching my fist I swung at a tree, the bones in my hand crushing on impact. * Ahhh, FUCK. * I shook my hand and paced more. Looking at it, it was mangled, blood dripped off of it and fell to the ground. After a couple minute of pacing I finally sat my bare ass on the lush grass, with my back to the cool wall and allowed myself to cry.
ReplyDeleteI sat there until the tears wouldn't fall anymore and my ass became numb. Standing, I knew I would have to walk back to the clinic and face the others. Shifting back into my wolf, I limped at walking pace back down the mountain side, hoping the slow pace would give my paw time to repair itself. It was a slow walk, I didn't realize I had ran so far. When I came up on the treeline I came across clothes that were folded neatly in a pile. My clothes. I could sense +Beck Hadrian not far away and when I looked towards the clinic he stood there leaning against his pickup. His arms and legs crossed. He spoke like I was standing beside him. * "They told me about the wall, I knew you'd be back. I didn't want you scaring the locals." * I huffed. Shifting, I quickly slid my jeans on and pulled my shirt over my head. Walking to the pickup there were boots and socks waiting for me. Beck didn't move, he just let me do my thing. * "I already packed our things and explained to +Joel Kieschnick and +Bethany Kieschnick about our sudden departure. We'll call +Mikaela Kieschnick and +Damon Kieschnick in a couple of days to let them know whats going on and check on Binks recovery. * I nodded. Beck turned to face me, grasping my shoulder. * I'm sorry about Jordan. I thought that on our way home, we'd stop and see if there was anything that could be recovered. * I swallowed, trying to keep my emotions under control. Nodding, I walked to the passenger side of the pickup and hopped inside. *
* I climbed into my truck, deciding to let Slade have his peace and quiet for now. I hadn't let Rae know we were leaving just yet. It was going to be a difficult conversation to have and I wanted to have it in person. I needed to be there when Rae learned her sister was dead. My mind ran through all the questions that I had. We had about a thirteen hour drive before we made it there. Slade flexed his hand and stared straight ahead. * Slade. * I gave him a minute to realize I was speaking to him. His eyes finally met mine. * Maybe they're wrong. Maybe it's not her. * Slade shook his head. * I know it's her. I can feel it, Beck. I can feel it. * He would know as her mate. I sighed, scrubbing my jaw. I needed a shave. What the hell had happened? Had she wrecked? Was it intentional? Was it a set up? I had a lot of questions for Sheriff Anderson when we finally got there. * You should try to rest. This won't be easy. * Slade nodded. * I know that. * I didn't want him to think I was trying to boss him around. I was just trying to help. This whole situation was shit. And it stank to high heaven, too. There were going to be a lot of people devastated over the loss Jordan. Mikaela would have my ass later when I finally told her what I knew. I just didn't want to compound her situation with Bianca. Binks needed her parents. I settled against the seat and got comfortable for the long drive ahead of us. *
