* I climbed the steps to home after leaving Skylar Johns at work. I was looking forward to a hot shower and some much needed sleep. Things were hectic with Tanner being gone. I'd texted him but hadn't got a response. I unlocked the door and tossed my keys in the basket next to it. I could hear water running upstairs. Sabre Johns must have gotten home while I was with Skye. I climbed the stairs to my room when I heard soft sounds coming from the bedroom Sabre used. She was not alone and I had a feeling I knew who was there. No doubt Galen Kieschnick was with my sister-in-law. I personally didn't care if they fucked around, but Skye would blow like a volcano if she found out. I tapped a knuckle on the door. * Sabre? I'm home. * I heard soft foot falls and the door opened. She smiled, her face flushed and her hair mussed. Galen sat on the foot of the bed. He raised his fingers in a greeting. Something was off with these two, I could feel it; smell it. My eyes looked between them and then I saw the faint mark on Galen. * What. The. Fuck? * I asked. Sabres face paled. * Now, hold on, Mase... * I shook my head. * Are you kidding me? Listen, Im all for mating, but damn, Sabre, your big sis is going to pop her top. * Galen stood up. * It wasnt on purpose. * I latched on that. * Okay, okay good. Then we can go see Damon, get this removed and then we all might live to see another day. * Galen disagreed. * No. I wanted to mate her. It just happened this soon by accident. * I scrubbed my eyes. Shit. I didn't want to think about these two doing the horizontal mambo. * Okay, look. This cannot happen right now. Skylar just accepted that her baby sis is dating. She finds out you're mated, shes going to lose her shit. Mate later. Right now, we have to fix this. * Sabre shook her head. * No, Mason. No. * I grabbed her shoulders. * Do our lives mean nothing to you? Are you willing to chance this? Because Ive seen Skylar on the war path. I prefer not to be her prey. * My phone rang and I answered it, my mind trying to reconcile how I was going to Skye. * I'm sorry, a what? * Dispatch explained again. * Okay, we're going. * I disconnected. * Gotta an accident scene down at the falls. Want to go?

* I repelled down first, just in case Galen or Sabre got crazy and fell. I slid my grappling hook along the secured line and slid down. My boots hit the sheered face of the rock as I made my way down. Sabre followed suit and then Galen. My feet touched the flat rock of the river bank and I spotted Sabre. I unhooked both of us and once Galen was back on his feet, we made our way over to the car. The summer heat hadn't been kind to the passengers left to rot. I could see kids things strewn about. Sabre gagged beside me. * Step downwind. * I told her. She nodded and did as I suggested. Fuck, I hated dead bodies. Galen was beside me. * What do we do? * I slid gloves out of my back pack and pulled them on, handing Galen pair. I passed Sabre to wrapped bags. * Open those. We're going to need them. * She took them and did as I asked. I knelt down next to the mangled piece of metal. * They're going to be stiff. * Galen remarked. * Probably disintegrate as soon as we touch them. Or explode. And spew us with bodily fluid. * I grimaced as I took pictures of the scene before setting the camera back in my bag. * Where the fuck is the air flight? They could help us. Fuckers. Alright, let's push the truck over, get it right side up. * Sabre was beside me. * It's alright, you don't have to. * I told her. She'd laid the body bags out neatly. * Just give me the gloves the Mason. * I directed her to my back pack and she too gloved up. * On the count of three, push it steady. It's going to bounce, so everyone be ready to move. * I counted to three and we pushed on the SUV's undercarriage. It gave way, saplings snapping under the weight. It slid a bit down the incline before bouncing left and right and stopping. Sabre waved a hand in front of her face to ward off the dust. I moved closer to the bodies to inspect them and the SUV for any evidence I could find. * Sabe, grab the camera from my bag and get some pictures, please. * I had my clipboard and paper and sketched the SUV on it, notating the damage as I did. *
ReplyDelete* I stepped over the rocks and took the camera. I snapped picture after picture of the decaying bodies in the vehicle. I tried to push back the emotions that wanted to rise at seeing the two corpses. One was obviously a female and the other a male. I focused the camera lens and caught sight of something along one of the side of the male's head. I stepped closer and mistepped on a stone slipped. Mason and Galen both reached out but I waved them off, my eyes still focused on the body. * Look. Right here. * I pointed to the area and looked up to catch my brother in law's eyes. * This guy was murdered. Look. He was hit here. * Mason closed in and narrowed his eyes. * It could be blunt force from the accident. Let the coroner in Bellingham decide. * I jolted at hearing that. * We're not taking them to the clinic for Damon? * He shook his head. * No. They're human. Besides... Damon and Mik have a lot to deal with right now. * I nodded agreement, but something was off about this "accident." It felt like maybe they were ran off the road, but in the end it was Mason's decision. He was the police in the area. I took more pictures as a helicopter hovered and flew over to find a place to land. Galen looked over at us. * It's the clean up crew. * Mason tugged on the driver side door and it creaked as it opened. I gagged as the smell hit us full force. I covered my nose and mouth with my elbow. I was a confectionery baker not a forensic pathologist. This shit was so not my expertise. Galen stepped over and reached to take the camera, but I shook my head. I agreed to do the job and I would. I pushed my gross factor away and went back to taking photographs. *

* Mason gestured me forward and I moved to help him. Slowly, we eased the male corpse out of the drivers seat and moved to the body bags that Sabre had laid out. Carefully, we eased him down inside the first bag and Mason zipped him up. We moved back to the other corpse - the female - and gently moved her. She had been wearing some type of flowery dress and it hung in tatters. That really shook me. It could have easily been my own Ma, and my own mind flashed with all the times I worried she would be killed by John Luke or Jimmy. We laid her down in the second body bag, what was left of her blonde hair matted around her half decayed face. I zipped the bag up as the air flight crew made their way over. We watched as they picked up the bags carefully and placed them on wheeled stretchers. * We have a wrecker on it's way to retrieve the truck and take it into Bellingham for analysis. We'll send the report to you? * Mason nodded and signed a release for the bodies and where the report should go. I realized standing there that I needed to go home and face my folks. Tell them I had mated Sabre. They deserved to know. I was raised to be truthful and up front. I looked at Sabre and she smiled at me. I loved her so much. We followed Mason back to the rope and hooked up, climbing back up the side of the mountain. Once we were back at the top, I turned to Sabre. * I have to go home and tell my parents. * She swallowed visibly, but nodded. * We need to. Skye too. * I agreed. We made our way over to the Jeep and climbed inside. Mason looked at us both. * Please for the love of God...wait to tell Skye until I get to sleep some. I'm begging you two. * I nodded. * We will. * Sabre snickered as Mason pulled back onto the road to take us back to their apartment above Skye Blue. *
