* Tanner McCloud and I made our way along the small town of Alexandria where I was from. We had visited the art museum and the cemetery. I spoke with folks I hadn't seen in years. It was shocking to me how far I'd come in such a short amount of time after being abducted. I had Tanner to thank for that. I grabbed his hand as we stood in line at a food truck serving po'boy sandwiches. The Red River was dotted with boats. Tanner kissed my cheek and I smiled up at him. * I love you. * He kissed me again and then it was our turn to order. We made our way to a nearby bench and sat down with our sack of food. * What are we going to do about Xavier? * I asked, unwrapping my sandwich. * Kill him. Skin him. Make a purse or something. * Tanner mumbled around a bite of food. I laughed at the thought, sinking my teeth into the soft, buttery bread. * I have plenty of purses. * Tanner grinned. * Well, remember that the next time you and Hemi go shopping. * He winked and I rolled my eyes. * Maybe we should approach the sheriff. Get a warrant. * Tanner squinted out over the water. * On what grounds? Its been over a decade since you disappeared. We have no proof. * I sat up on the bench. * We have to get in his house, Tanner. Thats where she would be. * My patience had reached its end. * We'll come up with something, Sadie. * I wrapped up the rest of my food and stuffed it into the brown bag. * When, Tanner? When? * He ran a hand through his hair. * Lets go back and speak with Virgil. See if he knows of anyone willing to help. * I agreed. It didn't take long for us to make our way back to my aunt and uncles. The evening was hazy, the heat of the day laying thick around us. I was being a child, but I couldn't help it. Not knowing what had happened to Mamere left me hopeless. Josephine was just finishing up supper as we came in the door. The news was on and Virgil was watching it, his feet on the small coffee table. * Hello. * He called out. I waved, heading into the kitchen. * What smells so good? * I asked, standing next to my aunt. * Catfish, baby. I got cucumber salad chilling, some cornbread in the oven and shortcakes for dessert if'n the cream will whip up in this heat. * Tanner was talking to Virgil as I moved to set the table. Josephine set her special sauce out; a combination of different flavors for fish. My mouth watered despite our stop at the food truck. I moved to pour tea, my ears straining to hear what the men were saying. *

* I sat down beside Virgil he glanced at me and I ran a worried hand over my hair. * What is it boy? You look like you been rode hard and put up wet? And not in a good way. * I sighed. I was worried that X as going to grab Sadie and I wouldn't be able to save her this time. I looked at my uncle in law our eyes meeting. * Is there anyone who knows how to get close to Xavier? Help stop him? * He shook his head and groaned. His bones popping as he moved into a more comfortable position. * If'n they was..don't you think we'd done called them? * I had to end this fuckers reign of terror on this town. Virgil eyed me suspiciously. * Whatcha thinkin'? * He's been too quiet...and that isn't good. Means he's planning something. I want to find a way to stop him. Before he hurts Miriam or worse yet.. Sadie. I love her and I want us to go home share our news and spend time with my sister and her mate and our nephew. This..* I waved a hand is good and all, and we love it that she has family but I want to get her to a place that's safe from that fucking gator. * Virgil nodded. He agreed, but he couldn't come up with one thing to help me out. * Josephine hollered from the kitchen. * Come get it. * I rose to my feet and helped Virgil to his feet, when he seemed to struggle. * You alright? * He waned me off. * Yeah I'm fine. Just gettin' old ..ain't nothin' I can't handle. * I steadied him and watched him walk slowly to the table, and I followed. I pulled Sadie into my arms and kissed her temple before pulling out her chair then Josephine's. They sat and then I took my own seat. Josephine patted my hand. * You're such a sweet young man. Sadie chose well. * I nodded as food was passed around. What was I going to do? These people were our family. I decided to make a journey into the bayou after supper, and see if I could find a true voodoo priestess. Not one of the ones in town for tourists. Sadie gripped my hand as if she knew what I was thinking. Someone had to know something around here. *
ReplyDelete* I struggled to get away from the two males holding me back as I watched Xavier disappear into the dark water of the river. I snarled and snapped my body needed to shift, but I fought against it. Suddenly without thought I was tossed across the expanse of Joesphine and Virgil's yard. I sailed through the air and landed hard on my shoulder and I hissed in pain. I gritted my teeth and waved Josephine off as I got to my feet. * Let me help you. * I shook her off and hissed at the pain in my shoulder. Pretty sure I dislocated it. * I got it. I'm older than I look, but I'm a little outnumbered here. * I stood and stared toward the river, scared and angry for my mate. My arm hanging limp at my side I approached the house and pressed my dislocated shoulder against the wall and with a cry of pain, I twisted and heard it pop back into place. I faced Sadie's family and let my anger free. * Tell me where he lives, where he might take her; if you can't then fucking find me someone who can. * Virgil looked at Josephine and she nodded. Virgil stepped up to me and I bristled, knowing they'd kept secrets. * I know of three someones. I didn't say anything before, because they are just as dangerous or worse than Xavier. The LeFebvre sisters. They live deep in the blue bayou. Mongolia, Monique, and Madelina. They're Miriam's cousin's daughters and they walk a tricky path. Between voodoo and witch craft. They may help you and then find a way to trick you into doing their bidding. Which isn't always good, Tanner. * I grabbed Virgil by his shirt. * It's a chance I'll just have to take. It's Sadie..I have to. * My heart was aching at her being captured and held against her will...again. Virgil nodded and told me where to find them. * I can go with you. I should. * I waved him off, my shoulder still throbbing, but I ignored it. * I need to do this alone. * I walked away and they didn't try to argue. I headed to the boat house at the end of the pier and climbed onto Virgil's fanboat. I checked the fuel and started the engine. Shit was fixing to get real in the swamps. *
